Wilma Flies, co-owner of Sav-Ur-Fur, discusses what makes the company’s bathing systems unique and what grooming salon owners need to know before investing in one.
Grooming Business: Tell us a bit about the company: how long it’s been around, what you produce and what distinguishes it from its competitors?
Wilma Flies: My husband, Kenny, and I officially started the company in 2009. I have been a groomer since 1991, and I had always wanted more from my bathing systems than what was on the market. What makes our system different than other bathing systems is the way we look at what the system does for the groomer. Ours are known for aiding in the removal of undercoat and shedding hair in the tub, by using our patented nozzles. Plus, they have a spectacular cleaning ability. When used with a great shampoo, there is no stopping the cleaning power.
I also love that any shampoo can be used with this system. It comes with 36 meter tips for different ratios. They are designed with the groomer in mind—they save money on shampoos and save groomers time spent on the big dogs that so many hate grooming, but that really make the money roll in.
I find by using our systems, I have cut our time on large dogs by half, which makes more money. Plus, using a bathing system stops you from wasting money on pouring shampoo down the drain when you pre-mix your shampoos in bottles or elsewhere. Our systems also handle up to six shampoos, and there is less clean up with blowing out that undercoat. While it might take a few more minutes in the tub, it saves time in clean up.
GB: How has technology evolved over the years to improve products in the bathing category? And how have these adjustments made bathing dogs easier and more efficient?
WF: It has exploded with different types of systems. Not every system is right for each shop. Each one has pros and cons, so do your homework. It makes life easier by taking the guesswork out of what shampoo to use. If you have six ready to use, all you do is turn on what you need.
GB: What do groomers need to know about bathing systems before investing in one? How do they find the best system for their needs?
WF: Groomers need to assess how many shampoos they use, how much time they want to save and how many large dogs with undercoat or shedding hair they do. They also have to consider what type of water pressure they have. Can they contact the company and get an answer fairly easy? One thing we do is respond on Facebook. Sometimes in a matter of seconds, I will answer a customer’s question—all you have to do is ‘friend’ me. As soon as I see the question, I try to answer as soon as possible.
GB: What kind of support should salon owners expect from manufacturers in this category?
WF: We offer a three-year warranty. We are the only system on the market with this warranty. The coverage is limited to manufacturer defects. It is at our discretion whether we replace the system or fix the defective part.
GB: What can we expect from Sav-Ur-Fur in the future?
WF: We are currently working on a recirculation system for our mobile friends.
GB: What inspired you to develop a system for mobile groomers, and how do their needs differ? What are they looking for in a recirculation system?
WF: Mobile groomers face a whole new set of issues. They have limited water and pressure, as well as limited holding tanks and space. They really need an undercoat system that takes all of this into consideration. Our new system will have the power to drop coat and shedding hair without the water usage. This will aid the groomer with clean up and keep a healthier environment. It will also be for groomers who have issues in shop. We already have a waiting list for the systems when they become available.
